It sounds trite to say that I know how you feel. But I do - at least about the "if I had been here."
In my case, had I been in Houston, my husband may not have killed himself. We were separated, but talked on the phone in a more friendly and loving manner than when we dated - this is after overcoming some of the hurt I caused when I left. I moved back to Virginia, and a year later, he's gone. It's been since July 3rd, and his birthday is one week from today, on the 27th. Talking about your pain is one of the best ways to let out. And you have to let it out before it eats you up. My pain was ripping me apart, and I started being hostile at my work. When I quit, I had a breakdown. I wasn't hospitalized, but I had a great support in my boyfriend. He helped me get most of the pain out.
There will always be hard days - days when you think of him and just want to curl up and cry. On those days, just take care of yourself. They will get less and less over time. God, Time, and Love heals all pain.
If you want to email me and talk about it, feel free to do so.
